This month we celebrate AAC and the freedom it gives to non-traditional communicators. It is estimated that there are over 2 million people that use AAC as a form of communication. Using aided AAC can provide a “voice” to those who do not use speech.
- AAC can be “high tech” or more complicated, like a device that generates speech.
- AAC can also be “low tech”, or more basic, like pictures on cards.
AAC evaluations can be done at any age. A good evaluation should include the person needing AAC, any important supporters, and professionals who can discuss available options.
The right fit for the person is key. It might take many tries to find what works best for them. Also, as people grow and change so do their communication needs. It is important to continually evaluate if the AAC is still working for the person.
